SHORT BIO

Alper Koz (Member, IEEE) was born in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, in 1978. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey, in 2000, 2002, and 2007, respectively. He performed postdoctoral research studies at Multimedia Signal Processing Laboratory, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, from 2008 to 2010; at Laboratory Signals and Systems, SUPELEC, Paris, France, from 2010 to 2011; and at Multimedia Group of Telecom ParisTech, Paris, France, from 2011 to 2013. He joined the Center for Image Analysis of METU in 2014. His research interests include hyperspectral image analysis, high dynamic range image and video processing, and multimedia watermarking and fingerprinting. Dr. Koz is an Associate Editor for Elsevier Signal Processing: Image Communication.


RESEARCH PROJECTS

My responsibility at the Center for Image Analysis of METU is to develop, administer, and execute research projects on signal and image processing for the Center. Some of these projects that I have enrolled as principal investigator or chief researcher are summarized below.

International Projects

[Pr1] Principal Investigator of the international project, "Remote Virus Detection in Cattle Breath Using Hyperspectral Image Analysis", (April 2024 - September 2024), funded by Farmspace LLC, Tennessee, USA. The main responsibility of METU team is the consultancy for experiments and data collections and to develop statistical and deep learning-based detection methods for remote identification of viruses in cattle breath using hyperspectral image analysis, along with designing experiments and data collection protocols.

[Pr2] Principal Investigator of the international project, "Remote Covid-19 Detection in Human Breaths Using Hyperspectral Image Analysis", (June 2022 – March 2023). The project was supported by and conducted in collaboration with the Health Science Center of the University of Tennessee, USA. The main responsibility of METU team was to develop statistical and deep learning-based detection methods for the remote identification of Sars-Cov-2 virus in human breath using hyperspectral image analysis, along with designing experiments and data collection protocols.

[Pr3] Chief Researcher and Co-administrator (April 2020 – February 2022) of the international project, "H3DR Camera: Smart Embedded Camera with Multi-Exposure & Multi-View Capability for Autonomous Vehicles," supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, in collaboration with the University of Warwick and Prof. Alan Chalmers. The project aimed to develop a novel multi-view, multi-exposure camera unit for HDR image formation and object detection in autonomous vehicles. Responsibilities included co-supervising graduate studies on HDR image processing, overseeing sensor design, conducting data collection across broadways in different illumination conditions, and managing administrative tasks related to budget and purchases.

[Pr4] Principal Investigator (March 2016 - February 2020) of the international project, "Backward Compatible and Native Encoding of High Dynamic Range Video and Its Perceptual Evaluation," supported by Scientific Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Integrated Actions-Bosphorus Programme. The French partner and PI are Laboratoire Traitement et Communication de l'Information (LTCI) of Telecom ParisTech-CNRS and Dr. Giuseppe Valenzise, respectively. The project's first objective was to develop backward-compatible high dynamic range image and video coding methods. The second objective was to explore DCT quantization levels of the human visual system for high luminance patterns up to 2500 cd/m² by designing and conducting visual experiments on a prototype HDR display.

[Pr5] Principal Investigator (May 2016-December 2019) for METU activities and National Representative and Coordinator in NATO SET 240 panel, "Exploitation of Longwave Infrared Airborne Hyperspectral Data". Participating nations in the panel are Belgium, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, USA, Sweden and Türkiye. METU's research focuses on the development of methods for hyperspectral registration and target rediscovery in SWIR and LWIR thermal hyperspectral images. Responsibilities included coordinating Turkish participants from five entities and ensuring the security of shared hyperspectral data.

National Projects

[Pr6] Chief Researcher and Co-administrator (September 2019 - October 2021) of a national project, entitled "Remote Detection of Illegal Electricity Usage with Multi-Sensor Imaging" supported by Energy Market Regulatory Authority of Türkiye. The objective of the project is to reveal the potential of four different sensors, namely hyperspectral, LIDAR, thermal, and electro-optic, mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle for detection and classification of illegal electrical transformers, addressing a critical concern for Türkiye's energy economy. The project involves the design of various experimental setups and development of statistical and learning based methods for remote identification.

[Pr7] Chief Researcher and Co-administrator (September 2016 - December 2018) of a defense supported project focused on remote detection of explosive residues using hyperspectral techniques. The project aimed to develop a ground-based hyperspectral imaging system for detecting car bombs in dynamic scenes, involving system design, radiance-to-reflectance conversions, experimental design for both laboratory and real-world conditions, and development of index-based, signature-based, and learning-based detection methods.
